Numerous Illustrations Both Full-page and In-text. Includes a color plate showing the Confederate Battle Flag. This flag is also known as the " rebel flag ", " Dixie flag ", and " Southern cross ", and sometimes as the " Stars and Bars ". Written from a Southerner's point of view , there is text concerning the author's thoughts on African Americans (blacks , negroes , former slaves) which would be considered controversial, at least, today.

There are illustrations which depict African Americans of the time in a less-than-complimentary light. The illustrations show Confederate soldiers in every-day life during the war , and include General Robert E. From the beginning of the American Civil War in 1861, to the days following the surrender at Appomattox in 1865, Carlton McCarthy draws the reader into the world of the common Confederate soldier.

With rich and vivid details of the military camps , marches , skirmishes and battles , his personal stories and anecdotes bring to life what it was like to be a soldier in the Army of Northern Virginia during that long brutal war. As a young man, McCarthy fought with local units before finally enlisting with the 2nd Company, Richmond Howitzer's Artillery Unit in 1864.

He captures their day-to-day life, as well as their triumphs and tragedies, with both heart wrenching honesty and with the healthy dose of humor that enabled them all to bear the long years of hardship and deprivation. There are chapters on camp life in the South , cooking and eating , Confederate uniforms , adventures in the field , infantry soldiers improvising in difficult conditions , the Battle Flag of the Confederacy , etc. Written with a homespun tone and descriptions of how Confederate soldiers walked, ate, fought, spoke, and what they wore and carried.

It re-creates the genuine feel of Confederate soldier life. This book has an accuracy and richness that could only come from a man who was actually there. The Army of Northern Virginia was the primary military force of the Confederate States of America in the Eastern Theater of the American Civil War.
