Rarely found Confederate carried Bible with a great presentation on the first EP, which presented the Bible from Caroline Clagett to her son, Dr. Robert Gerard Clagett, upon his departure to fight in the Rebel army with the 1st MD Cavalry in 1863. Records show Clagett was a private, but also show he was a surgeon as his father was, and most likely served that purpose in the unit during the War. There are dark red stains in the last 1/5 of the Bible along the edges. There is a small'teachers token' in there as well; a small ticket of sorts given out for good behavior in school, and this has a bloody fingerprint on it as well.
This was probably Robert's from school before he departed (he was 19) and was used as a bookmark or something similar. Rare nicely bound Civil War era leather larger pocket bible. Measures at 7" x 4.25" x 2. The item "1860 Confederate Civil War Bible First Maryland Calvary Surgeon" is in sale since Wednesday, March 14, 2018.
