INFANTRY CIVIL WAR SOLDIER'S LETTER CAMP NEAR NORFOLK, VIRGINIA. This marvelous Confederate Civil War letter was written by Private Willie G Land of 1st Co.
H, 12th North Carolina Infantry. The 12th North Carolina Infantry was mustered into Confederate service on May 18, 1861. The unit participated in every engagement as part of the Army of Northern Virginia and was present at Appomattox Courthouse. Norfolk, Sept the 17th, 1861. I hope dis few lines will find you all well.You wrote to me that you had got my clos and you got all of dem as far as I know and also I got dem stocking and the letter you sent by E. You sent to me that if I wanted every clos you would send them to me. You need not send dem to me for mabey I shal come before I need dem. I would have answered your letter before now but I diden have the chance. I have nothing new to write to you but to tell you that we have moved back to the oil camp neer Norfolk lecked captain William Lutman command and will leck S.
Vick for our captain and I think he will let us all go home. I will remember my love to you all and give my love to Elizabeth and Mandy and their children and to Elizabeth and Charley. I don't want you to eat all the chickens up before I come back.
I want you tom save me 4 or 5 until I come home. Only I remain your dear son until death. The letter has several small holes. They do not obstruct the content.
